Progress Under the Voucher for Assets (VFA) Project – Beletweyne District 15/April/2019

📍 Habaasweyne & Donkudle Villages, Hiran Region, Somalia
📅 April 15, 2019
🎯 Funded by: WFP | Implemented by: HIDIG

The WFP-funded VFA (Voucher for Assets) project continues to yield tangible impact across Beletweyne’s rural communities, focusing on community infrastructure rehabilitation, livelihoods, and improved food security.

🔹 In Habaasweyne Village, a total of 250 meters of critical irrigation canal rehabilitation was completed by 120 community members selected from vulnerable households. This will directly benefit local agricultural activities and ensure better water management for nearby farms.

🔹 In Donkudle Village, 80 vulnerable households took part in a community-led road clearing activity. So far, 2.3 kilometers of road leading into Beletweyne from Donkudle have been cleared of overgrowth and obstructive vegetation. The target is to complete 5 kilometers by the end of the project, enhancing access, transport, and environmental sanitation.

💳 As part of the VFA approach, each participating household receives a monthly entitlement of $55 through POS machines, ensuring transparency, accountability, and preventing duplication. The value can be redeemed in selected WFP-contracted shops in Beletweyne for essential food items like rice, flour, sugar, oil, pasta, milk, meat, dates, and vegetables.

🔸 Overall, the project (Jan–May 2019) is supporting 500 direct beneficiaries across five villages including Habaasweyne, Donkudle, Kurtumaaley, Sigalow, Xaskule, and Dharkeynley — benefiting over 3,000 household members indirectly.

👏 These activities reflect the power of community-based development in addressing food insecurity, enhancing livelihoods, and building local resilience.
