📍 Project Title: Provision of Integrated Multi-Sectoral Lifesaving Services to Flood-Affected Communities in Beletweyne District, Hiran Region (Health, WASH & Nutrition)
📅 Implementation Period: December 2019 – July 2020
👥 Implemented by: HIDIG Relief and Development Organization
🤝 Supported by: Somalia Humanitarian Fund (SHF)
During the implementation of the SHF-funded project, HIDIG successfully constructed 324 emergency latrines for flood-affected households in villages situated along the riverbanks of the Shabelle River — areas most severely impacted by the flooding.
The newly constructed latrines were established in the following villages:
Kurtumaaleey, Wariirile, Dhaayga, Haarcadey, Hilaac, and Ceel Jaale.
Prior to the construction phase, HIDIG conducted community consultations with village hygiene and water committees to determine the most appropriate latrine design and ensure the facilities met community needs. Following construction, awareness sessions were organized to educate households on proper latrine use, maintenance, and hygiene practices, including handwashing with soap after using the toilet to prevent disease transmission.

📣 Impact:
- A total of 324 flood-affected households now have access to safe and dignified sanitation facilities, significantly improving environmental health conditions.
- The intervention reduced the risk of open defecation and disease outbreaks such as cholera and acute watery diarrhea (AWD).
- Increased community awareness and ownership of sanitation facilities through continuous engagement and hygiene promotion activities.
- The integration of handwashing stations adjacent to latrines strengthened the promotion of hygiene behavior and improved overall community health.
